Pets for sale across India: a buyer's guide

Looking for pets across India? Start by deciding what a good everyday match would look like. A useful listing gives you a photograph, a location and a way to ask questions, but the next step is a conversation with the person caring for the animal. This guide helps you compare advertisements, prepare for a visit and plan the first days at home. Take your time with each step; a suitable companion is worth a considered decision.

Start with a search you can follow up

You can search by pet type, breed, state or city without filling every field. Begin near home so it is easier to meet the animal and return with further questions. Breeds represented in current matching ads include Akita, Beagle, Chihuahua and Chow Chow. Open the full listing to read the description and check the owner contact details. If a number is unavailable, choose another listing or contact PetBuy with the ad reference.

Picture an ordinary day together

Start with your household rather than a favourite photograph. Consider the animal's adult size, expected lifespan, activity, noise and daily care. Ask how it behaves around people, what it eats and what kind of space it currently lives in. A dog, cat and bird need very different homes. Research the species carefully and make sure everyone involved understands the routine. If you are unsure, talk to a vet or an experienced carer before narrowing your search to a particular animal.

Have a proper conversation with the seller

Ask why the animal is being offered, how long the seller has cared for it and what its current routine looks like. Request recent photographs or a short live video if you need more context before visiting. Mention your household, experience and any other pets so the conversation goes both ways. Clear answers are more useful than impressive adjectives. Keep the listing number and a copy of the agreed details. If information changes between messages, ask for an explanation before making plans.

It is also worth asking what happens after collection. Will the seller answer a question about the current food or explain a familiar routine? Discuss that expectation early and keep any agreement clear. If buying is not the right route for you, a local shelter or rescue may offer another way to find a suitable companion. Take the same care over introductions, records and long-term responsibilities whichever route you choose.

Make time for health and care records

Ask for a clear account of age, diet, preventive care and any previous treatment. The records you need depend on the species and the animal's history. A veterinarian can explain what to check and whether a further examination is appropriate. If registration, identification or origin papers are offered, check what each document actually establishes. A document about ancestry is not a promise of health. Keep copies and resolve gaps before arranging a permanent move.

Ask your own veterinarian to review anything you do not understand. A photograph, a featured badge or a seller's description does not establish a health guarantee.

Look beyond the asking price

Among the current matching advertisements with a stated price, asking prices run from ₹5,000 to ₹1,06,000. These are advertised figures, not a valuation or a promise of availability.

Set aside money for appropriate food, equipment, preventive care, grooming and unexpected veterinary visits. Consider recurring costs over the animal's lifetime, not just collection day. When comparing two ads, ask what records, supplies or arrangements are included. Agree the total and the terms in writing. Avoid paying simply because a seller says somebody else is about to take the animal; you still need time to check the details.

What to notice when you meet

Arrange a visit where you can see the animal's usual environment and spend some unhurried time together. Notice how it moves, responds to handling and interacts with the person caring for it. Ask about anything that seems different from the advertisement. Where appropriate, ask to see the mother and understand how young animals are being raised. You can leave a meeting without committing. If a health or behaviour concern needs expert assessment, arrange that advice before agreeing to a purchase.

Get your home ready before collection

Prepare the right living space before collection: a secure resting area, suitable food, fresh water and species-appropriate equipment. Check everyday hazards, escape routes and interactions with existing animals. Ask the seller to describe the current feeding and care routine, then keep the first days quiet and predictable. Arrange a veterinary appointment and discuss any changes gradually. Every animal settles at its own pace. Give it room to rest and build confidence rather than introducing every visitor at once.

Plan the journey home too. Use suitable, secure transport, agree the collection time and ask about any immediate care needs. Make sure a responsible person is available during the settling-in period. If your working hours change or you travel regularly, organise reliable care in advance rather than leaving those decisions until the animal arrives.

If you are posting a pet ad

Use your own recent photographs and write about the actual animal: age, known history, daily routine, location and anything a future carer needs to understand. Be open about treatment or behaviour that needs attention. Keep your account name and mobile number accurate so interested people can contact the right person. Update or remove an ad once the animal is no longer available. Ask prospective owners questions too. A thoughtful conversation helps both sides decide whether the proposed home is suitable.
